Buenos Aires Government Launches Restoration of Two Iconic Buildings

The Government of the City of Buenos Aires has launched a tender for the restoration of two iconic buildings in the historic downtown: the Palacio Municipal and the former La Prensa building, both located on Avenida de Mayo. The restoration works will include conservation work on the facades and upper sections of the buildings, such as domes, mansards, roofs, and towers. The project is aimed at halting the progressive deterioration of the buildings and recovering their original expressiveness. The works are scheduled to begin in April of this year with an approximate execution period of one year. During the prior survey, deformations, surface corrosion, missing pieces, and the presence of layers of paint or added materials that do not correspond to the original facade were identified. The restoration of the Palacio Municipal will include the complete restoration of the facades on Avenida de Mayo, Bolívar, and Rivadavia, as well as domes, mansards, balconies, ornaments, and carpentry. On the roofs, the conditions necessary to prevent water leaks in the plans and joints will be restored. The project also includes an architectural lighting plan for all facades of the building, with the installation of more than 70 luminaries to highlight the characteristic features of the Palacio Municipal, including domes, mansards, and the clock. The total intervention will cover an approximate area of 6,200 square meters between the two buildings. The former La Prensa building, inaugurated in 1898, will also be restored to preserve its architectural and cultural significance.
